On Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013 AT&T U-Verse customers blasted the company and complained bitterly on social media with complaints of outages to their high speed internet, digital TV and home phone service. Many of the customers who depend on AT&T’s home phone services to link their home security system to their alarm monitoring station were left totally vulnerable for days while AT&T attempted feverishly to restore their services across several states.

In addition to Metro Atlanta, thousands of customers were left without T.V., internet, phone and security as far west as Texas and Oklahoma and as far south as Florida. AT&T customers angrily vented their frustration with AT&T’s poor service and slow response to the problem on Twitter and Facebook. Many customers tweeted about their anger over long waits on the phone with AT&T customers service. One customer, Tamara Robinson of Duncanville, Texas, complained on Facebook: “This was my day off and no T.V. or internet for 9 hours now. No explanation and no time for it to be fixed. This is unacceptable. No inauguration for me.”

As you probably know, this is not the first time for service related problems for AT&T. Many AT&T cell customers have cancelled their cell service and switched to other providers because of network problems at AT&T.

Now AT&T is seeking to boost their quasi monopoly revenues by adding security alarm offerings to their bundled mixes. This is a totally new field for AT&T and we predict problems. Comcast has recently entered the crowded security market and many of their customers have reported service issues as well.

If you are considering security services for your home it would be wise to think long and hard before contracting with a cable company, telephone company or a power company. Many of those companies who have lusted for increased security revenues have bailed out in failure after only a couple of years. Two examples of security folly in the Atlanta area are Power Call Security from Georgia Power and Bell South Security from Bell South. That’s just the Atlanta area. Nationally the landscape is littered with other failed attempts by power companies and telephone companies to enter the security profession. Remember, ADT is not experimenting. They have been in the security business for over 135 years. And they will be in the security profession long after these telephone companies, power companies and cable companies have decided to get out of the security business.
