Two-thirds of Retailers Are Currently Seeing An Increase In Organized Retail Crime
According to a report from the National Retail Federation (NRF), more than two thirds of the retailers surveyed reported on increase in organized retail crime (ORC) over the past year.
The report which polled more than 60 retailers found that 97% of the retailers said that they have been victimized by ORC in the past year, and 68% experienced an overall increase in ORC activity.
Losses from ORC averaged $703,320 per $1 billion in sales. This marks the fourth year in a row that the figure has topped $700,000.
“Organized Retail Crime continues to present a serious challenge to the retail industry, “NRF V.P. of Loss Prevention Bob Moraca said in a statement. “These criminal gangs are sophisticated, but so are loss prevention teams. Retailers are now committing more resources and constantly evolving their tactics to fight this ongoing challenge.”
Stolen merchandise is sometimes returned for store credit usually in the form of gift cards. Those gift cards can then be sold for cash. Also, 51% of retailers then found these gift cards on sale on websites, while another 17% found in the pawn shops.
ORC gangs typically steal a mix of high-end designer products and easy-to-fence everyday necessities such as infant formula, razors, designer handbags, laundry detergent, and high end liquor among other items.
Retailer’s efforts to fight ORC focus on more than just merchandise theft. What may be even more alarming is the fact that 68% of retailers said that ORC gangs had been more aggressive and violent in the last year. Consequently more retail store resources and monies are spent towards protecting the actual safety of their customers and employees from violent crime.
