Roswell, GA – A John’s Creek homeowner died on March 9th after her home caught fire. Unfortunately, her home did not have a working smoke detector. Tragically this happens all too often in the Atlanta and Georgia area.
As far as fire safety, fire officials tell us that working smoke detectors and monitored smoke detectors are extremely important for home fire safety.
“Smoke detectors are the number one source of safety for a resident,” said Roswell Fire Marshall Paul Piccirilli. “That’s what’s going to wake you up in the middle of the night and get you out of the house.”
Nationally, three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms, reports the National Fire Protection Association.
Piccirilli said there are several different kinds of smoke detectors to choose from. They all detect smoke, although they work differently. Consumers should evaluate them carefully before choosing one. The absolute best type of smoke detector that is monitored 24 hours a day by a security alarm company. These types of smoke detectors not only are designed to wake you up in the event of fire with a loud siren but they also cause your closest fire station to dispatch emergency personnel within seconds of the smoke alarm. This greatly increases the chances of your survival. It also minimizes damage to your home.
In Roswell, Georgia, homeowners and other residents are invited to schedule a free home safety inspection through the Roswell Fire Department. Inspections take approximately one to two hours. They can be scheduled by contacting Chris Cooper at (770) 594-6225. These inspections will cover your smoke detectors as well as escape plans in the event of a fire and ways to prevent a fire from combusting in the first place.
